Finding a New Purpose for Do A Dot Markers: A DIY Scrapbook Background

Discover how to use Do A Dot markers and tissue paper to create colorful DIY scrapbook backgrounds. An easy, creative paper craft experiment!

Sometimes, the most interesting art supplies are not necessarily the ones we buy specifically for crafting. Sometimes, they are already sitting on a shelf, waiting for us to discover a completely different purpose for them.

That is exactly what happened with my Do A Dot markers.

A little backstory: Why I bought these markers

I originally bought my Do A Dot markers for school. As a primary school teacher, I am always looking for materials that can make learning a little more fun and hands-on.

The children enjoyed using them during English lessons, especially when the activities involved vocabulary, matching, recognizing words or following simple instructions. They were a great addition to certain classroom tasks, and the children loved the opportunity to use them.

At home, my own kids were curious about them, too. They experimented with the markers for about ten days, but the initial excitement eventually faded. They didn't really find a reason to keep using them.

And honestly, I wasn't sure what else to do with them either.

As an art supply, they seemed a little limited. I could think of the usual dotting activities, but I wanted to find something more interesting. I started looking online for creative ideas and alternative uses, but I couldn't find much inspiration.

So, I decided to experiment on my own.

What are Do A Dot markers?

Do A Dot markers are chunky markers with a sponge-like applicator at the tip. Instead of drawing with a traditional marker point, they leave behind round, colorful impressions when pressed onto paper.

They are often used for children's activities, dot art, simple patterns and coloring worksheets.

Their shape makes them quite different from ordinary markers. You can create individual dots, overlapping circles, repeated patterns and even use the applicator to build interesting textures.

And that got me thinking: why not use them to create scrapbook paper?

The unexpected combination: Do A Dot markers and tissue paper

For this experiment, I chose tissue paper.

I love working with different kinds of paper, especially when they can be transformed into something decorative. Tissue paper is thin, lightweight and slightly translucent, which makes it interesting for layering in mixed media projects and scrapbooking.

I placed the tissue paper on my work surface and started playing with the Do A Dot markers.

There was no complicated plan or precise design. I simply tried different colors, dots, overlapping shapes and patterns. Some areas became denser, while others were left more open.

The result was a colorful, playful pattern that looked completely different from the usual dot-marker worksheets.

What I particularly liked was that the markers allowed me to create a decorative background without needing brushes, paint palettes or lots of additional supplies.

Just paper and markers!

Turning a simple experiment into scrapbook paper

One of the things I enjoy most about scrapbooking is that the background doesn't always have to come from a beautiful patterned paper pad bought in a craft store.

Sometimes, making your own paper is much more satisfying.

A handmade background can be completely unique. You can choose the colors, control how busy or minimal the pattern is, and create something that fits a particular photograph, memory or scrapbook theme.

This tissue paper experiment could be used in several ways:

  • As a decorative background for a scrapbook page.

  • Torn into smaller pieces and used as collage elements.

  • Layered over another piece of paper to create texture.

  • Used in junk journals and art journals.

  • Cut into strips, circles or other shapes for embellishments.

  • Combined with stamping, handwriting, doodles or other mixed media techniques.

Because tissue paper is so thin, it can also be interesting for layering. Depending on the adhesive and the paper underneath, some of the background may remain visible through it.

I can already imagine using these colorful patterns alongside photographs, tickets, little notes and all those small pieces of paper that make scrapbook pages personal.

A little experiment, a new possibility

I wouldn't say I've discovered the ultimate use for Do A Dot markers, but this experiment has definitely given me a new reason to take them out of the drawer.

I bought them for school, used them for educational activities, and now I'm trying to turn them into a creative tool for my own projects.

And perhaps that's one of the nicest things about making art: you don't always need to know exactly what a supply is supposed to do. Sometimes, you just have to try something different.

I still have plenty of ideas to test with these markers, and I'm curious to see what else they can do.

For now, this little piece of decorated tissue paper is ready to become part of my scrapbook.

One more handmade paper, one more experiment, and one more reminder that creative possibilities can be hiding in the most unexpected places.

Make art. Make a mess.
