Interactive THIS/THAT slider activity! Students move pictures to see how distance changes meaning—perfect for ESL, centers, and hands-on grammar pract
Teaching this and that can be tricky—especially for young learners and ESL students. These small words seem simple, but understanding how distance changes meaning isn’t always easy.
That’s why I created this interactive slider activity—to make learning demonstratives visual, hands-on, and fun!
💡 The Idea Behind the Activity
Instead of just reading sentences, students can see and experience the difference between this and that.
By moving a picture closer or farther away, the sentence changes right in front of them:
-
THIS is a/an… → when the picture is close
-
THAT is a/an… → when the picture moves farther away
This simple movement helps students truly understand the concept—not just memorize it.
✂️ How It Works
Setting up the activity is easy and teacher-friendly:
1️⃣ Print the base pages on different colored paper (for example: orange and pink)
2️⃣ Glue the pages together to create a sturdy base
3️⃣ Insert the picture sliders
Once assembled, students can pull the sliders and watch the magic happen!
📦 What’s Included
-
2 base pages to build the slider board
-
8 pages of sliders (3 sliders per page)
-
24 picture cards (animals, food, school supplies, clothes, and more)
🎓 Perfect For
✔ ESL / EFL learners

❤️ Why Students Love It
This activity feels more like a game than a worksheet. Students are actively involved, curious to see what happens when they move the slider, and excited to practice again and again.
