Turn an empty Ferrero Rocher box into a fun DIY color matching activity for ESL and young learners. Includes a free printable color pattern sheet. 🎨
Sometimes the best classroom activities come from the simplest ideas. This fun color matching activity started with a chocolate box and quickly became one of my students’ favorite hands-on games!
My daughter gave me a beautiful box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates, and when the chocolates were gone, I noticed the box had 24 small spaces inside. Instead of throwing it away, I turned it into a color reading and matching activity for my ESL students.
The result? A simple, engaging activity that practices reading color words, matching colors, and following patterns.
What You Need
To make this activity, you only need a few simple materials:
• An empty Ferrero Rocher chocolate box (24 spaces)
• Colored paper or craft paper
• A circle paper punch
• Glue
• A small jewelry box or mini container for storage
• The free printable color pattern sheet (download below)
How I Made the Activity
First, I used a circle paper punch to cut out 24 circles from colored craft paper.
I made 5 circles of each color:
🔴 Red
🟠Orange
🟡 Yellow
🟢 Green
🔵 Blue
🟣 Purple
🌸 Pink
⚪ White
The circles fit perfectly into the chocolate tray spaces.
To keep everything organized, I glued a small jewelry box on top of the chocolate box. This is where the colored circles are stored when the activity is not being used.
How the Activity Works
Students use a color pattern sheet that shows different combinations of color words.
Their task is to:
-
Read the color words on the sheet
-
Find the matching colored circle
-
Place it in the correct space in the chocolate box
It becomes a fun puzzle-style activity while students practice reading color vocabulary.
This activity works especially well for:
• ESL students
• early readers
• literacy centers
• fast finishers
• small group practice
Students love the tactile element, and the chocolate box makes it feel like a game.
Free Printable Color Patterns
To make the activity easier to use in the classroom, I created a color pattern printable with 5 different color combinations.

Why My Students Love This Activity
This activity is simple, but it is very engaging for young learners. Students enjoy:
• reading color words
• solving the pattern
• placing the circles like a puzzle
• working with their hands
And the best part? It is made from recycled materials, which makes it both fun and practical.
Final Tip
Next time you finish a box of chocolates, take a look before throwing it away. You might just find your next classroom activity inside!
